It’s been a hot summer here in Brisbane … and some days it’s still hot! Especially the middle of the day when the kids ( or parents ) are playing sport on the weekends.
On these days I sometimes find it hard to make sure that my kids have enough water to keep them hydrated.  I know, I know … the kids will drink when they need it.  But sometimes, they are just too busy to know that they need an extra drink.  And how often do you hear them complain about having water .. they would much prefer something flavoured.  As you may know, I’m not a fan of sugary, flavoured drinks so finding something that the kids will actually want to drink is a little frustrating.
We all know the effects of dehydration .. headaches, tiredness, crankiness .. yes, both you and the kids.  ** Stops for quick glass of water because I don’t drink enough **
When I received an email asking if I would like to try Hydralyte for the kids and family over summer, I was actually really interested. Staying hydrated is so important on a daily basis, but even more so when it’s hot and kids are so active!  I’ve written a post about hydration here before because it’s just so important.
Anyway, moving on, Hydralyte have released a whole bunch of Electrolyte products for rehydration that you can use everyday.  I received a little care package from Hydralyte so that I could check out a few of these products  … I’ve only really known it and used it when the vomiting and diahhrea bug descends on the house.  In my pack I got some pre mixed drinks, some ice blocks and tablets that you toss in a glass of water.

Let me say that the ice blocks were the hit of the house! The kids absolutely loved them and I wasn’t complaining that they were downing heaps of sugar.  They usually headed straight to the freezer on the way in the door when they got home from school. The ice blocks were great for my clients too! Over summer it can get rather warm training and the ice blocks were a great way of getting a little extra fluid and to cool down!  I’ve run out now, so I’ll need to grab some more next time I head out!
Hubby and I tried the Ready to Use Electrolyte Solutions after our runs on the weekend … no preparing, just open the lid.  Hubby thought they were fine, but I still thought they were a bit sweet.  That’s usual for me with this type of drink and that’s why I don’t drink them! We also are using the Electrolyte Effervescent Tablets after a run in the heat.  These are great because you can just pop one into a water bottle and let it fizz up … Miss 13 has also used these for a little bit of an extra boost when she has sports training at school at lunch and then backs up for more training later that evening.  So much easier to drink than litres of water!
You don’t have to save them up for when you have been working out, because you can start to feel the effects of dehydration before you even know you are dehydrated.  If I’m feeling like I haven’t had enough to stay hydrated then I’ll use one of the tablets in a glass of water .. it’s really easy to drink and you are getting that little bit extra! Another little tip just for the adults … pop a tablet in a glass of water before bed or first thing in the morning if you’ve had a few too many glasses of bubbles …
Would I recommend Hydralyte .. yes, definitely if you or the kids are involved in quite a lot of activity.  And the new options are just so much easier to consume you don’t even know it’s doing you good!
Let me know if you’ve tried Hydralyte and what you think.
